Like a plaything of the forces of nature, the research icebreaker Polarstern defies the raging waves of the Southern Ocean. Here, where the Antarctic Circumpolar Current chases incessantly around the continent, the stability of the mighty ice sheet of East Antarctica will be decided. It was once considered unyielding, but the warming of the ocean threatens to shake its foundations - with consequences of global proportions: sea levels, currents, climate system. To find answers, an international group of researchers set off on board the Polarstern in November 2023. In the middle of the world's stormiest waters, they set up camps, collected samples of ice and rock and ventured into unknown areas with helicopters. It is science at the very edge of human endurance - and of crucial importance for our future.
